man's man

In the new issue of W, I love this quote from Jon Hamm on manhood:

"I was raised by a single mother. I think the definition of a man’s man has shifted in recent times to this sort of fratty bro, different from the older version, which was aloof and distant—Gary Cooper or Cary Grant or James Bond. Now it’s a little vulgar, kind of lowbrow, adolescent. I’m not that guy. Part of being an adult is treating women like women."

don't carry me back to ole virginny

If you haven't watched your dvred episode of Sunday night's Mad Men, stop reading, but those who have ... remember who got fired this week?

Joe. My. God. posted a clip from a debate between Creigh Deeds and Bob McDonnell. McDonnell flat-out says he would overturn Mark Warner's order banning discrimination against hiring on the basis of sexual orientation.

I am outraged that McDonnell would want to revert his state back to the Mad Men era. There has been a lot of griping about Obama's slow movement to change LGBT issues. Yet there is a lot happening at local levels that could have devastating consequences for the community. I hope my home state will turn out for Deeds, but so far, McDonnell, flush with money and an admittedly effective moderate makeover, is in the lead.

mad style

Forgive me. I know Mad Men style is talked-out but I'm late to the party and have just recently gotten into the show (in midst of Season 2 now) and felt compelled to post some favorite looks. Janie Bryant's costume design is brilliant. Unlike many period pieces, the clothes in Mad Men aren't showy and over-the-top. They have subtle charms and prints and reveal much about the characters . The show has been attributed to bringing back the fitted glam of the early 1960s. Its influence (belted waists and fitted dresses) is apparent in many of Fashion Week's 2010's collections.

Love this skirt on Trudy Campbell. Source [fashion renegade]
